Getting Started
How do I set up VetoSpam?
After downloading, open VetoSpam and follow the guided setup. It walks you through three steps: enabling call blocking in iOS Settings, configuring Screen Unknown Callers, and choosing a Scam Baiter persona. The entire process takes about 60 seconds.
VetoSpam doesn't appear in Settings → Phone → Call Blocking & Identification
Make sure you have fully completed the setup in the VetoSpam app first. After enabling the extension, it may take a few seconds to appear in iOS Settings. If it still doesn't appear, try force-closing VetoSpam and reopening it, then check Settings again. Restarting your iPhone can also help.
Call Blocking
How do I add a number to my blocklist?
Open VetoSpam, tap the + button, enter the phone number and an optional label (e.g., "Telemarketer"), and tap Save. The number will be blocked immediately — no restart required.
Will VetoSpam block calls even when the app is closed?
Yes. VetoSpam integrates with iOS at the system level using Apple's Call Directory framework. Once enabled in Settings, it works in the background without the app needing to be open.
Does VetoSpam automatically block known spam numbers?
Yes. VetoSpam includes a continuously updated database of known spam phone numbers. This database is downloaded to your device and works alongside your personal blocklist. You can also add your own numbers manually.
Voicemail Screening
How does voicemail screening work?
When you receive a voicemail from an unknown caller, open it in the Phone app, tap the Share button, and select "Screen with Veto." VetoSpam will transcribe the voicemail using on-device speech recognition and classify it as spam, likely spam, or legitimate. The result appears immediately — no audio ever leaves your phone.
What does "Robocall Detected" mean?
VetoSpam analyzes the timing of voicemail transcriptions. Pre-recorded robocall messages are delivered at a consistent, unnaturally fast pace with no pauses or filler words. When VetoSpam detects this pattern, it flags the voicemail as a robocall — even if the words themselves don't match typical spam keywords.
Can VetoSpam screen voicemails automatically?
Currently, you share voicemails with VetoSpam manually using the iOS Share Sheet. This is by design — it keeps VetoSpam from needing background access to your phone or voicemail, which protects your privacy.
SMS Spam Filtering
How does SMS filtering work?
VetoSpam uses Apple's Message Filter framework to check incoming text messages from unknown senders against the blocklist. Matching messages are automatically routed to your Junk folder in Messages. Messages from your contacts are never affected.
How do I report a spam text?
When you receive a spam text, tap the Share button and select VetoSpam. The app will open a pre-filled SMS to 7726 (the carrier spam reporting shortcode) and automatically add the sender's number to your blocklist so future messages from them are filtered.
Scam Baiter
What is the Scam Baiter?
The Scam Baiter is an AI-powered feature that engages scammers in conversation using one of four personas: Confused Grandma, Hard-of-Hearing Grandpa, Curious Child, or Distracted Parent. It wastes the scammer's time so they can't scam real people.
How do I use the Scam Baiter?
There are two ways to use it:
- Voicemail Trap: Go to the Bait tab, select a persona, and tap "Generate Voicemail Greeting." Set the generated audio as your voicemail greeting. Scammers will think they've reached a real person.
- Call Back & Bait: After screening a spam voicemail, tap "Bait This Scammer." VetoSpam will call the number back on speakerphone and the AI persona will take over the conversation, listening and responding in real time.
Does the Scam Baiter record calls?
No. The Scam Baiter listens to the scammer's voice in real time using on-device speech recognition and generates responses using on-device speech synthesis. No audio is recorded or stored. A text transcript of the conversation is saved locally on your device.
Is the Scam Baiter legal?
The Scam Baiter is designed for use against unsolicited spam and scam callers. Laws regarding telephone calls and recordings vary by jurisdiction. You are responsible for complying with the laws in your area. We recommend using the Scam Baiter only to call back numbers that have already been identified as spam by VetoSpam's screening.
Privacy & Data
Does VetoSpam collect any data?
No. VetoSpam collects zero personal data. There is no account, no email, no analytics, and no third-party SDKs. All AI processing — speech recognition, natural language analysis, and voice synthesis — happens entirely on your iPhone. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
How do I delete all my data?
Go to Settings in the VetoSpam app and tap "Clear All Data." This will permanently delete your blocklist, screened calls, and audit log from your device. Alternatively, deleting the app removes all associated data.
Can I export my data?
Yes. Go to the Audit Log tab in the app and tap the export button to download your log as a JSON file.
Purchase & Compatibility
Is VetoSpam a subscription?
No. VetoSpam is a one-time purchase. There are no subscriptions, recurring fees, or in-app purchases. You buy it once and own it forever.
I purchased VetoSpam but it's asking me to buy again
Tap "Restore Purchases" in the VetoSpam app settings. If the issue persists, make sure you are signed in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to purchase the app.
Does VetoSpam work on Android?
